The training didn't work

One of the most common excuses given for a failed project is that the training didn’t work.

That’s like saying the marriage failed because the music at the wedding reception was bad.

By the time you get to the training stage of a project, a number of other things need to have been planned and executed in order to create an environment where the training can succeed. Training is an event, not a process. All the things that need to happen prior to training are processes. They cannot be ignored or executed poorly if you expect the project to succeed.

If the training isn’t properly designed, with learning objectives identified, success metrics in place, and the needs of all the various target populations taken into account, there’s a pretty good chance it will not work.

But all too often, leaders try to compress training to save money or meet deadlines. Again, the focus is on completion rather than success. So the training is finished, but no one is using the “new thing.”
